Word order in German sentence 3 – where to place NICHT

1) NICHT is normally placed AFTER the verb: Ina zeichnet (nicht).

2) If there is a direct object (accusative) in the sentence, NICHT comes AFTER it: Die Schüler machen ihre Bücher (nicht) auf. Ich lese das Buch (nicht).

3) If there is a indirect object (dative) NICHT is placed again AFTER it: Wir helfen nseren Eltern (nicht).

4) If both object appear in the same sentence, NICHT will take place AFTER both objects: Der Schüler gibt der Lehrerin das Heft (nicht);

5) if there are free adverbial Angaben for place, time, manner and reason in the sentence, NICHT comes BEFORE them: Der Unterricht beginnt (nicht) um 8 Uhr. Sie gehen (nicht) nach Hause. Wir gehen (nicht) in die Schule. Er schreibt (nicht) schnell; Er soll (nicht) so viel essen. Ich stehe (nicht) früh auf.

6) if there is a prepositional object in the sentence, NICHT comes AFTER OR BEFORE it: Wir warten (nicht) auf unseren Freund (nicht); er erinnert sich (nicht) an seine Schulzeit (nicht).

7) if the sentence consists of many parts and you are unsure where to place NICHT – just place it as far as possible towards the end of the sentence: Die Musiker enttäuschten das Publikum gestern im Konzert (nicht).

8) when you want to negate somebody’s occupation, you can use either NICHT or KEIN, KEINE. KEIN: Mein Vater ist (nicht/kein) Busfahrer.

9) There are some expressions with “objects” which are actually not the “real” “objects”. In those cases, you should use NICHT and NOT KEIN, KEINE, KEIN: Er fährt (nicht) Auto (= he cannot drive, he didn’t do the driving course yet); Da hast du (nicht) Recht! (you are wrong!); ich kann (nicht) Rad fahren; ich kann (nicht) Radio hören.

10) If you are asking yourself how to say that you DON’T speak some language, just say: ich spreche (kein) Arabisch.

Sie arbeitet (nicht) als Putzfrau.                                                                              Der Schüler wohnt (nicht) hier.                                                                                    Das Seminar findet (nicht) in Belgrad statt.
Das Buch gehört dem Kind (nicht).
Ich gehe (nicht) in die Stadt.
Wir freuen uns (nicht) auf die Ferien (nicht).
Meine Großmutter ist (nicht) gesund.
